Location-Free Income for Massage Therapists (that actually works)

Location-Free Income for Massage Therapists (that actually works)

August 11, 20266 min read

I've noticed chatter in my feed lately about massage therapists launching digital products – building an audience on social media and turning that into an extra income stream alongside their hands-on work. A kind of "massage-therapist-meets-influencer" model.

And some people are doing this really well! And I'll be honest, I like it as a business model... when it works.

In fact we do a version of this ourselves – we've got a whole range of small and large digital products in our own business. So digital products and services are a great way to create income.

BUT, here's the catch: building an audience big enough to earn a reasonable income from digital products alone, takes a long time. It's not a "quick" side hustle, and it's definitely not a magic bullet that works for every massage therapist who gives it a go.

So I want to share a few other stories instead, to add to this conversation... stories that show a more familiar way for a lot of MTs when it comes to building a location-free business.

Eileen: running a clinic from another country

Eileen was a Mastery member of ours a few years back. She runs a massage business that is based in Australia, while she herself lives in New Zealand most of the year.

Eileen still practices massage herself from NZ, but the majority of her income comes from a small clinic with a handful of staff, run entirely out of Australia. She makes this work because she's got the right systems and software in place – online bookings, payroll handled through online services, and people on the ground who keep things running day to day.

She stays closely connected with her team despite the distance, and they're a close-knit group who genuinely love working there. It's proof you can run a warm, connected, well-loved business while spending most of the year somewhere else entirely.

Shona: five weeks away, and the clinic improved while she was gone

Shona is a current member of our Mastery program. She runs a larger clinic in Perth, and she recently spent five weeks overseas travelling with her family.

While she was gone, her team didn't just keep things ticking over – they implemented a brand new piece of task-tracking software to help organise their roles, and they were ready to show her the moment she got back.

Shona used to work hands-on in the clinic herself, but injuries and personal circumstances have meant stepping back from treatments over time. But she's usually very engaged with her staff and the daily running of the business, so she was nervous about being away for five weeks. But the systems she's built meant she was almost completely hands-off the whole time, only stepping in for things like confirming payroll and the occasional vital admin question.

That's a huge credit to how organised and dedicated Shona has been about building a business that can run without her in the room.

Elicia: from solo therapist to a fully remote role

Closer to home, you might already know the story of Elicia, one of my partners here at The Health Leader Co (and my wife!) Elicia started out as a solo massage therapist many years ago, then grew that into a clinic with a small team of staff, which meant she could take time off (and still get paid) when we had kids.

Then in the last 10 years she's created online training, mentoring, writing a book, running podcasts, social media accounts, and lots of other amazing opportunities – each with its own income stream (some bigger than others) but together adding up to a generous full-time income. These days she only practices massage a couple of afternoons a week. Her full-time role can genuinely be run from anywhere in the world.

Our team is actually spread across Australia, the US, and the Philippines, and we work with clients globally – a lot of what we do is remote, with travel for workshops and events layered on top.

Christine: building a training business after successful clinics

Christine, my other business partner, has a similar story. She started solo and moved location several times over the years – meaning she had to rebuild her client base from zero more than once. And at one of those locations she also ran a clinic with staff.

These days, Christine's stepped into a full-time role as a partner in The Health Leader Co, adding hands-on trainer for the massage therapy industry, having created two unique courses — gentle scar therapy and remedial hot stones. Both are delivered primarily online, with occasional in-person intro workshops around Australia and North America. Christine is also a business coach and has a mentoring role in our programs.

This is a slightly different flavour of location-free business, but the same principle applies. Christine travels to UK and other overseas locations several times a year for training and to visit family. At the same time she also has a small clinical practice at home in Aus, because she still enjoys the hands-on work once or twice a week.

The common thread for hands-free income

All four of these stories show it's genuinely possible to earn a a full-time wage equivalent (or more) from a business that isn't tied to one location, with your hands on backs.

But... none of them got there by selling $7 ebooks or $19 courses. Those things can be a great addition to your business, and they're worth having in the mix if you want them for pocket money. But it can be a long and difficult road to turn low-value digital products into a liveable income on their own, and it relies on creating a large number of followers online (which not everyone finds easy).

In our experience, the businesses that get there most easily have those low-cost digital products alongside running a team or adding higher-value offerings.

Team is of course not the only way to be hands-free, there are also activities like workshops, retreats, intensives, trainings, classes, or other experiences that let you leverage your skills and knowledge, not just your hands.

That combination is what creates a sustainable, hands-free income long term.

By now we've helped well over a hundred massage therapists build businesses like this through our Mastery mentoring program. (Plenty of other Mastery members have different goals too, which are just as fabulous.)

So if you're interested in building income and impact beyond your hands-on treatments, get in touch. We'd love to look at what you've already got going and talk through what the next step might look like for you.
